It allows you to express your ideas about a person’s writing and it also ensures that other readers understand how you interpreted the writer’s work. The clearer you write, the better the reader will be able to understand what you are trying to say.”  His top tips for writing a simple but effective critique are as follows –

Introduce the book in the first paragraph — When you are writing your critique, you want the reader to know which book or article you are reviewing. As a result, you have to list the name of the article or book, the author name and provide a general storyline of the book. This hook serves to catch the reader’s attention and it also proves that you have read the book.

Start your interpretation in the second paragraph — once the introduction is complete, you can then put down what you thought of the storyline. Ensure that you introduce the central characters and how they work and their back story works with the plot and the book. Be as precise as possible and avoid being too critical at this stage.

Start your critique in the third paragraph — Now you can list what you thought of the book or article and how it impressed or confused you. Make sure that you provide specific instances where the book or article went off course or failed to provide a successful ending or conclusion. If necessary, point out parts where the author could have done better research. Orlando Figes says, “Its not necessary to be only criticizing about a book or an article. You might like certain parts of the book and you should always try to combine good with bad.
